Iaido

Iaido is the art of the Japanese Samurai sword. An art that teaches immense concentration and self-discipline, Iaido has become a very popular Martial Art for people of all walks of life. It is a journey back to the days of the Samurai of Old Japan that in modern times helps oneself relieve the stresses of everyday pressures and develop a respect for life.

IAIDO, is the Samurai sword art associated with the smooth, controlled movements of drawing the sword from its scabbard, performing striking or cutting techniques and then replacing the sword in the scabbard.

Students start learning Iaido with wooden swords known as Bokken or Bokuto and unsharpened metal swords known as Iaito. Advanced students use sharpened swords known as Shinken.

Iaido students learn formal movements known as Kata as well as partner drills to learn the concepts of the art. Advanced students also learn how to cut with the sword doing simulated test cuts known as Tameshi Giri.

Iaido, though not a competitive sport by nature it has recently been demonstrated at tournaments throughout the US. Competitors each demonstrate a minimum of 4 forms and are judged on their understanding of the forms, proper movements and concentration.

The USA Martial Arts—North Shelby school is part of the All Japan Iai Tate Do Federation and the USA Iaido Shoshin Ryu.
